Why Travel Rewrites Your Drinking Rules
A trip changes the cues around drinking before it changes anything else. The airport lounge stays open. The hotel minibar restocks itself. None of that makes you a different drinker, but it removes the signals that normally mark an evening: the usual hour, the usual glass, the usual people.
The unit you are counting in is shaky before the plane leaves the gate. In the United States, one standard drink is about 14 grams of pure alcohol: a 12-ounce beer at 5% alcohol by volume, a 5-ounce glass of wine at 12%, or a 1.5-ounce shot of spirits at 40%.
Cross a border, and the definition moves. A 2016 study in the journal Addiction checked 75 countries and found that only 37 had an official standard drink definition. Among those 37, the most common size was 10 grams of pure ethanol, and the range ran from 8 grams to 20 grams. The same glass can be one drink where you stand and nearly two where you land.
The Measure Problem: Your “One Drink” Is Not One Drink
The gap between the tally in your head and the pour in your glass has been measured. A 2020 study in PLOS ONE asked undergraduates to pour a standard drink from mock beer, wine, and liquor products at high and low alcohol concentrations, labeled either with alcohol by volume or with the number of standard drinks in the container. People tended to under-pour the low-concentration drinks across beer, wine and liquor, and to over-pour the high-concentration ones. When the label stated standard drinks per container, pour accuracy improved for low-concentration products across beer, wine and liquor. For high-concentration products, that label clearly helped only with beer, and beer labeled by alcohol by volume produced the study’s most dramatic over-pours. So read the label where a container has one, and treat “one glass” as a question rather than a number. A count rebuilt from memory hours later is where the drift starts. What Your Phone Can and Cannot Do
The strongest evidence for drinking reduction delivered by phone or computer is a 2017 Cochrane review of personalized digital interventions. It included 57 studies and 34,390 participants, and the main analysis, from 41 of them covering 19,241 participants, found that people using a digital intervention drank about 23 grams of alcohol less per week than people who received no intervention or minimal input, a result graded moderate quality. A separate pooled result found about one fewer binge drinking session per month. The techniques that carried the effect were behavioral, not technological. In the review’s multivariable analysis, behavior substitution, problem solving, and a credible source were the components associated with reduced consumption. An app is only a delivery mechanism for those, and a trip is a good place to plan the substitution in advance: a different first drink, a plan for the second round.
That review is also clear about the ceiling. Only five small studies, with 390 participants between them, compared digital delivery against face-to-face support, and that evidence was graded low quality. An app is not a proven stand-in for a person.
A 2018 trial in Scientific Reports tested five modules of one drinking-reduction app and found no statistically significant main effect of any module on weekly consumption. The enhanced self-monitoring and feedback module was used significantly more often, and rated higher for helpfulness, satisfaction, and recommendation than the module’s minimal version. The trial’s positive results sat in two pairings of modules, one effect on weekly consumption and one on the full AUDIT score. Tools help most when people keep using them.
When Habits and Tech Are Not Enough
Alcohol use disorder is a medical condition, and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism describes it as a brain disorder that can be mild, moderate, or severe. Roughly 60% of the risk is heritable, with genes and environment interacting rather than adding up cleanly. Planning and tracking carry plenty of people; some are managing something that behaves differently. The gap between those two groups shows up in the data. In the 2024 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 27.1 million US adults had alcohol use disorder in the past year, about 10.3%. Of them, 7.5% received any alcohol use treatment, and only 2.4%, about 665,000 people, received medication-assisted treatment. A 2023 review in JAMA pooled 118 clinical trials and 20,976 participants and found that oral naltrexone lowered the return to heavy drinking with a number needed to treat of 11, meaning 11 people need to be treated for one more to benefit; the figure for a return to any drinking was 18. naltrexone treatment options sit alongside counseling, therapy, and mutual-support groups rather than in place of them.
What Altitude Does to the Night
A 2024 study in the journal Thorax tested what happens when alcohol meets the low air pressure of a long-haul cabin. Twenty-three healthy participants spent two nights with a four-hour sleep opportunity in a sleep laboratory at 53 meters above sea level, and 17 did the same in an altitude chamber set to 753 hPa, equivalent to about 2,438 meters. They drank a moderate amount of alcohol before one of the nights. The numbers are stark. Combined alcohol and low pressure pushed median overnight oxygen saturation to 85.32% and median heart rate to 87.73 beats per minute, against 95.88% and 63.74 beats per minute on the laboratory control nights. Time spent below the 90% oxygen saturation threshold came to about 201 minutes under the combined exposure, against about 173 minutes in the low-pressure nights without alcohol, and zero minutes in the laboratory control nights. Deep sleep took the hit too. Participants spent 46.50 minutes in N3, the deepest stage, under the combined exposure, against 84.00 minutes with alcohol in the laboratory and 67.50 minutes in the laboratory control. The authors’ own conclusion is blunt: the combination reduced sleep quality, challenged the cardiovascular system, and extended the period of low oxygen saturation.
Landing With Your Plan Intact
Timing does more work than most people expect. A 2026 review in the journal Nutrients examined the past decade of evidence on alcohol and sleep in adults and found that alcohol can shorten the time it takes to fall asleep while fragmenting the rest of the night and impairing breathing, especially in the second half. The review also suggests that timing may matter, with earlier consumption potentially reducing some adverse sleep outcomes compared with drinking close to bedtime, and it states that alcohol should not be treated as a sleep aid at all. The habits that survive a trip are the ones written down before it. One rule for the lounge. One substitution for the first drink. A log you fill in as you go, in a unit you actually checked. If sleep is the part you care about most, a personal cutoff time for the last drink of the evening, set early enough that the timing finding works in your favor. Substitution and problem solving were the techniques tied to the effect in the Cochrane analysis, and a phone is only where you keep them.
